Councillor
A Redpath in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Belfast John Carson and other city Councillors opened the clubhouse on August
30th, 1985 and the late Fred Daly Open Champion opened the course.
This was a much needed and welcomed facility for the populous of the Glengormley area with a wide
catchment area extending from Antrim through to the Greater Belfast Area. Year
by year improvements have taken place and the course has developed from an initial nine hole par three to one of the most
challenging short courses in Ireland today. In fact the late Fred Daly who played
the course many times was quoted as saying that it had the potential to become the finest short course in Ireland.
Some time after the course opened a number of regular course members decided to form Mallusk Golf
Society and in October 1985 a meeting was held in the clubhouse and Mallusk Golf Society was officially formed with a membership
of 12 members.
The membership of the Society soon grew in the early years and had to be restricted to 60 by Belfast
City Council with the course membership restricted to 250. This restriction was
required due to the large number of casual players and visitors who played the course in the early years.
In March 1992 the Society changed its name to Mallusk Golf Club and applied for membership of the
Golfing Union of Ireland (Ulster Branch) and in December 1993 the club accepted membership of the GUI (Ulster Branch) and
was also accepted into the East Antrim League for the 1994 season.
Over the past ten years the club has participated in many interclub competitions from GUI (Pierce
Purcell, Jimmy Bruin, Ulster Fourball, Junior Cup, Irish Boys) to East Antrim League, Daily Mail Foursomes, Mail on Sunday
Classic and Irish Nines Championship. With these competitions the club achieved
success and recognition at the highest level for a club once referred to as “The Cinderella Club” by Jack Magowan
of the Belfast Telegraph.
From 1994 Mallusk has competed in the East Antrim Golf League which is played between all fourteen
golf clubs in the East Antrim area and over recent years Mallusk has won the league four times and the Juvenile League once.
In 2000 Mallusk defeated Letterkenny Golf Club in the Ulster Final of the Mail on Sunday Golf Classic
and defeated Headford Golf Club from Co Meath in the all Ireland Final to represent Ireland in the UK finals at the Belfry
Golf Club Birmingham. Mallusk also reached the Ulster semi-final of the Pierce
Purcell competition and were narrowly defeated by Ballybofey Golf Club at Dungannon.
In 2002 Mallusk defeated Enniskillen Golf Club in the Ulster Final of the Daily Mail Foresomes
and Mitchelstown Golf Club, Cork in the all Ireland final to represent Ireland in the UK finals at the Dalmahoy Golf Club,
Edinburgh. This final was between the best 32 players (16 clubs) in Ireland and UK from the initial 119,000 players teeing
off in the qualifying rounds. Mallusk also defeated Whitehead Golf Club in the
Ulster Final of the Mail on Sunday Classic in 2002 and were defeated by Milltown Golf Club, Dublin in the All Ireland Final.
In 2003 Mallusk defeated all the other Ulster nine-hole clubs in the National Nines Classic and
represented Ulster in Jersey against 14 teams from UK, Ireland and Holland. Mallusk
finished the tournament a honourable fourth.
During this period the golf scene in East Antrim changed greatly with the opening of five new golf
clubs and Mallusk Golf Club entered into negotiations with Belfast City Council on the future management of the golf course
at Mallusk.
These have been exciting times for the club once referred to as the minnows of Ulster Golf however
this year marks a completely new dawn for the club. In 2005 the membership of
Mallusk Golf Club changed the name of the club to the City of Belfast Golf Club and took control of the course and clubhouse
at Mallusk under a facilities management agreement with Belfast City Council. Councillor
Jim Rodgers OBE performed the official opening of the City of Belfast Golf Club in September 2005.
The future therefore looks good for all concerned with a new club name and management agreement
that is to the mutual benefit of the Club and Council.
City of Belfast Golf Club will continue to offer fantastic value for money on a challenging course
and all members and visitors alike will always be made welcome by our friendly and helpful staff.
As we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year perhaps “Cinderella” will
get to the ball.
